Offering remote work is a bare minimum requirement in today’s job market. In order to retain and attract employees amid the Great Resignation, you need to offer additional benefits. Here are seven things today’s workers will value.
The pandemic has shown employees the value of the flexibility and freedom that remote jobs offer, and employers are taking notice. According to research from Ladders, remote opportunities multiplied from about 4% of all jobs paying over six figures before the pandemic to about 9% at the end of 2020. By the end of this year, they’ll represent more than a quarter of high-paying jobs.
But employers shouldn’t rest on their laurels just because they’re flexible about remote work. The Great Resignation has made it obvious that workers will continue to demand more from their jobs, and they deserve it. As a CEO, you want to look beyond remote work to other types of benefits you can offer.
Employees who feel valued and respected are more productive and less likely to leave their organizations. Consider providing your employees with the resources they need to do great work without micromanaging their time. To keep your best talent, consider these additional benefits to deepen engagement and make sure your employees are getting what they need.
- High-Tech Benefits
You can provide remote workers with the latest tech, including mobile workstations like laptops, tablets, or even smartphones programmed with the tools they need to do their jobs from anywhere. For instance, apps for real time payments allow workers to be paid faster and more regularly, and it gives them greater control over the timing of paychecks. For your remote workers, you can offer work-from-home allowances to cover the cost of home office essentials like an ergonomic chair or a standing desk, which can also help keep them focused and comfortable. - Flex and Part-Time Options
Everyone wants more control over their time. For instance, a working parent may appreciate the ability to drop their kids off at school in the morning, or someone with a long commute may prefer to come in and leave early to avoid traffic. Students, caregivers, or those with other outside commitments may opt for part-time work. By offering flex hours, you open up your company to a wider pool of talent and show that you’re flexible and accommodating. - Health and Wellness Benefits
The pandemic has forced everyone to reevaluate what’s important in life. For many people, this means taking better care of their health and well-being. Employers can support employee health goals by offering wellness benefits like discounts on gym memberships, on-site fitness classes, mental health counseling, meditation classes, or even in-office massages. You can be sure to provide healthy snacks and drinks at work, offer discounts on healthy food delivery services, or help out employees plan for future health and medical expenses through a health savings account or a life insurance plan. - Additional Paid Time Off
In addition to sick days and vacation days, you can offer additional paid time off for employees to use however they want. This might include sabbaticals to travel and pursue their interests, family leave, or even just a day off to relax and recharge. PTO is a great way to show your employees that you value their time and understand that everyone needs a break once in a while. - Extended Parental Leave
There’s no doubt that parents have been feeling the strain over the past few years. When schools and daycares closed, many had to take on the role of teacher as well as parent while still trying to do their jobs. Even post-pandemic, parents still need support. Parental benefits might include on-site childcare or reimbursement for childcare expenses as well as generous paid maternity and paternity leave. - Continued Education and Development Opportunities
Investing in your employees’ career development is a win-win for both them and the company. By offering opportunities for professional growth, you’re showing that you’re committed to their long-term success. Offer professional development opportunities, including conference attendance, online courses, and in-house training programs. For those continuing their education, you could even offer tuition reimbursement or assistance with student loan payments. - Rewards and Recognition
When employees have some ownership in a company, they’re more productive, loyal, and invested in its future. Public recognition, whether it’s verbal or monetary, for going above and beyond in a task can go a long way to promote feelings of gratitude and appreciation. And for high-performing employees, consider offering cash bonuses or stock options that give them an even greater stake in the company’s success.
It’s clear that today’s workers want and deserve more from their jobs. To keep your best talent engaged and productive, you need to offer them benefits that go beyond remote work. With all of these potential benefits at your disposal, there’s no reason to lose top employees due to a lack of engagement or investment. Your employees will appreciate any gesture that shows them how valued they truly are.
